Le kalpak est le vêtement célèbre. Ce chapeau en feutre blanc porté par les hommes après l’âge de 6 ans.Chaque forme et chaque couleur a une importante signification. Il existe 80 types de Kalpaks. Il prend une forme de montagne enneigée, avec quatre versants, qui représentent chacun un élément (l’air, la terre, le feu, l’eau). Les couleurs représentent l’âge et le statut social de l’homme qui le porte, alors que les symboles portent différents messages : les tribus, la mère-protectrice... Pour les Kirghizes, le Kalpak est plus qu’un chapeau pratique, isolant, porté en hiver comme en été. C’est un élément sacré qu’on traite avec beaucoup de respect : il est par exemple interdit d’offrir son kalpak à un autre (en dehors de l’héritage). Le tchapan, un manteau avec le col haut et un pantalon en daim ou en cuir. Parfois, les kirghizes offrent aux invités d’honneur le kalpak finement brodé et un long manteau appelé tchepken. The colours represent the age and social status of the man wearing it, while the symbols carry different messages: the tribes, the protective mother, etc. For the Kyrgyz, the Kalpak is more than just a practical, insulating hat, worn in winter and summer alike. It is a sacred item that is treated with great respect: it is forbidden, for example, to give one's kalpak to another (apart from as part of one's inheritance).
